To Be Black, Intellectual and Butch
It took me a long time to decide what to say about being a black butch woman. A great deal has already been said, rivers of ink have flowed and countless electrons sent whizzing around the Internet, in the name of defining and illustrating what it is to be butch. However, there’s an image of butchness that is rarely seen or even recognized: what of the butch intellectual? The TV host, Rachel Maddow, is really the first acknowledged butch intellectual I’ve ever seen. Leslie Feinberg, whatever other appellations might crown her in glory, isn’t referred to as an intellectual. Butches are known to be many things, we all carry an image of a butch in all her glory but amongst those images, I’d wager that very few of them are of a woman sitting at a desk eagerly figuring out some arcana of Linux or Apple Script or lying on a couch, some copious tome on evolutionary biology or string theory in her hands. Yet, we do exist. I know we do because I am one.
Reduced Conference Hotel Guestroom Rate
It’s not a secret that hotels are suffering a bit in our current economic times. Even the Oakland Marriott City Center has had to look at rate structures and lower its weekend rates in order to remain competitive. Thus we are now able to offer our attendees a reduced guestroom rate at the host hotel of $119 for the conference over the dates of 8/20 – 8/23 2009!
The changes will be made by end of day Friday 5/15/09 in their reservation system to reflect this change and all existing room reservations will be modified to reflect the new rate. If an attendee has already reserved a room and has provided an email address they will receive confirmation of this change.
So take advantage and book your room at the host hotel where most of the conference events and workshops will be taking place. The cut-off date for the conference guestroom rate is July 31st, so register today!

Financial Aid
Butch Voices is working hard to provide a quality conference while at the same time, keeping costs for everyone involved as low as possible. That being said, we would like to offer financial aid to those who might otherwise be unable to attend. For those who are truly be suffering from economic hardship, rather than choosing to spend their income on other non-essential goods and services, financial assistance may be available to help make attend the conference more affordable.
